Javier Milei\u2019s victory in 2023 was driven by deep voter fatigue with the traditional formulas represented by Kirchnerism<\/strong>. After years of state control, chronic inflation, recurring recessions, and unfulfilled promises, much of the population \u2014 including young people and urban middle classes<\/strong> \u2014 sought a radical alternative. With an aggressive, anti-establishment, and ultraliberal rhetoric, Milei channeled this discontent into a decisive victory, promising to \u201cblow up\u201d the structures of the State and restore economic freedom to Argentines.<\/p>

1. From Populism to Austerity: The Chainsaw Shift<\/h3>

Javier Milei\u2019s arrival to the presidency was marked by an unprecedented legislative and executive offensive<\/strong>. Through Decree of Necessity and Urgency (DNU) 70\/2023<\/strong> and the \u201cBases and Starting Points for the Freedom of Argentines\u201d Bill (Ley Bases)<\/strong>, the government presented over 300 measures<\/strong> aimed at broad deregulation, deep public spending cuts, and market liberalization.<\/p>

The rhetoric of the \u201cchainsaw\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 the symbol of his reforms \u2014 materialized in actions designed to eliminate state privileges and shrink the public sector, but also generated intense social resistance<\/strong>, particularly from unions and civil organizations<\/strong>.<\/p>

Despite political and social conflict, macroeconomic results<\/strong> began to emerge. Monthly inflation fell from 25.5% in December 2023<\/strong> to 11.0% in March<\/strong> and 2.8% in April 2025<\/strong>. The annual projection is 31.8% for 2025<\/strong>, marking a sharp deceleration. Fiscal consolidation was aggressive: the primary deficit of 5% of GDP in 2023<\/strong> turned into a 0.6% surplus in 2024<\/strong>.<\/p>

This reversal came with severe cuts: pensions fell 16.4%<\/strong> in real terms, public wages 14.5%<\/strong>, and infrastructure investments dropped 77.2%<\/strong>. Economic activity suffered \u2014 the country entered a recession (-3% in 2024)<\/strong> \u2014 but with a 5% growth forecast for 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>

2. D\u00e9j\u00e0 Vu with the IMF: Changing Everything Without Changing That Much<\/h3>

With inflation falling, fiscal surplus achieved, and a strong anti-interventionist discourse, Milei began to be celebrated<\/strong> by media and investors as a symbol of a new Argentina<\/strong>. The highlight came with a new US$20 billion IMF loan<\/strong> (US$12 billion disbursed upfront), which helped rebuild international reserves \u2014 negative in 2023<\/strong>, now at US$36.8 billion<\/strong>.<\/p>

However, there is an undeniable paradox: despite his anti-system rhetoric, Milei turned to the same institution<\/strong> and the same kind of external debt<\/strong> that previous governments \u2014 including left-wing ones \u2014 had used without lasting success. Argentina, after all, is the country with the highest number of sovereign defaults in modern history<\/strong>, according to data from Credit Suisse<\/strong> and the World Bank<\/strong>.<\/p>

Recurring reliance on the IMF has never proved to be a \u201csilver bullet\u201d<\/strong>, and in light of recent history, there is reason for caution regarding the sustainability<\/strong> of this new cycle.<\/p>

3. Soy, Lithium, and LNG: Solid Ground Amid Instability<\/h3>

Even amid the liberal shock, the traditional pillars of the Argentine economy<\/strong> remain relevant. In agribusiness<\/strong>, Argentina stands out for soybeans, corn, and beef<\/strong> \u2014 exporting grains to China<\/strong> and soybean meal to the European Union<\/strong>. In energy<\/strong>, unconventional oil exploration in Vaca Muerta<\/strong> and the opening for LNG exports<\/strong> have created new opportunities.<\/p>

In the mining sector<\/strong>, lithium<\/strong> has put the country on the map of the global energy transition<\/strong>. And in the digital economy<\/strong>, Mercado Libre<\/strong> remains a regional success story, with Mercado Pago<\/strong> promoting financial inclusion.<\/p>

However, cuts to science, universities, and innovation funding<\/strong> are concerning \u2014 the brain drain<\/strong> could jeopardize the country\u2019s technological future.<\/p>

Support for Milei\u2019s economic plan came not only from the IMF<\/strong>, but also from Washington<\/strong>. The visit of U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent<\/strong> to Buenos Aires, with statements of \u201cfull support\u201d<\/strong> for Milei\u2019s reforms and a promise to make the U.S. Argentina\u2019s \u201cpreferred partner,\u201d<\/strong> sealed a geopolitical alignment.<\/p>

Adding to this, Starlink<\/strong> was authorized to operate in Argentina, and there are rumors of a potential Tesla factory<\/strong>. Milei has also been perceived as a key ideological ally<\/strong> of international conservatism, especially aligned with President Donald Trump<\/strong>.<\/p>

Curiously, during Trump\u2019s \u201cLiberation Day\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 an event where new tariffs on rival trading partners were announced \u2014 Argentina was included<\/strong> among the countries taxed at 10%<\/strong>, the same rate applied to Brazil<\/strong>, which does not share the same ideological alignment with the U.S.<\/p>

This paradox highlighted that, although Milei has explicitly courted Washington<\/strong> and promoted pro-market reforms<\/strong>, the tangible commercial recognition remains limited<\/strong>. It raises doubts about the real return of this diplomatic realignment<\/strong> and how much Argentina truly gains<\/strong> from placing all its bets on a single strategic partner.<\/p>

4. Who Owns Argentina\u2019s Future?<\/h3>

Although Javier Milei<\/strong> has managed to reverse key macroeconomic indicators<\/strong> in record time, Argentina\u2019s future<\/strong> remains deeply uncertain. The reliance on decrees, growing social fragility, and the recurrence of old solutions<\/strong> \u2014 such as IMF borrowing<\/strong> \u2014 cast doubt on the long-term sustainability<\/strong> of this new cycle.<\/p>

For investors, the current moment favors a selective approach<\/strong>: extractive and primary sectors<\/strong> such as energy, oil, gas, and agribusiness<\/strong> appear to be safer bets, anchored in real assets<\/strong>, stable external demand<\/strong>, and lower exposure to institutional turbulence<\/strong>.<\/p>

Meanwhile, industrial and technology-intensive sectors<\/strong>, which depend on regulatory stability<\/strong> and innovation investment<\/strong>, may continue to face higher risks<\/strong> in a country still seeking its new equilibrium.<\/p>
