On May 16 of this year<\/strong>, a case of avian influenza<\/strong> was confirmed at a commercial poultry farm in Montenegro<\/strong>, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul<\/strong>. The mere disclosure of this single case on May 22<\/strong> was enough for China, the European Union, and Chile<\/strong> to temporarily suspend Brazilian chicken imports under the sanitary void protocol. Two months later, the Brazilian federal government<\/strong> continues working with international markets to restore confidence in the sanitary safety<\/strong> of Brazil\u2019s poultry production.<\/p>

In this context, the importance of a common imperative across all agribusiness sub-sectors becomes clear: traceability throughout the production chain<\/strong>.<\/p>

Brazilian agribusiness \u2014 a robust pillar of the national economy and one of the largest food producers in the world \u2014 is at a strategic inflection point<\/strong>. Sustainability and traceability<\/strong>, once considered competitive advantages, are now requirements<\/strong> for market access, both domestic and international.<\/p>

Although Brazil is a global example in adopting sustainable agricultural practices such as no-till farming<\/strong> and the use of bio-inputs<\/strong>, there is still much progress to be made in implementing traceability systems powered by technologies like blockchain<\/strong>. The country leads in sustainability metrics: more than 55% of farmers<\/strong> use biological products for pest and disease control, surpassing adoption rates in both the European Union and the United States<\/strong>. Over 80% of farms<\/strong> have adopted the no-till system (SPD)<\/strong>, which preserves soil health and reduces carbon emissions. The Crop-Livestock-Forest Integration (ILPF)<\/strong> model covers 18 million hectares<\/strong>, with projections to double by 2030, and Brazil is a global benchmark in the reverse logistics of empty pesticide containers<\/strong>, with 100% collected and 97% recycled<\/strong>.<\/p>

In livestock<\/strong>, Brazil combines production growth with sustainability \u2014 productivity per unit of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions<\/strong> has increased steadily (3.92% in livestock and 3.93% in agriculture between 1990 and 2020<\/strong>).<\/p>

Despite this remarkable progress, challenges remain significant<\/strong>. Economically, implementing sustainable practices and traceability technologies involves high upfront costs<\/strong>, which represent a major barrier, especially for small and medium-sized producers. A study by Embrapa<\/strong> shows that the cost of investing in digital solutions \u201cfrightens\u201d 67% of farmers<\/strong>. There is a lack of targeted incentives<\/strong> for traceability technologies, and high interest rates<\/strong> combined with economic volatility<\/strong> discourage long-term investments.<\/p>

Additionally, a grain storage deficit of 122 million tons<\/strong> and insufficient modern logistics expose harvests to climatic risks and pest outbreaks<\/strong>, affecting profitability and economic sustainability.<\/p>

On the regulatory front<\/strong>, the scenario is complex and constantly evolving, demanding continuous adaptation. New international pressures \u2014 such as the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)<\/strong> \u2014 impose strict requirements on Brazilian exports, potentially creating non-tariff barriers<\/strong> that negatively affect export prospects. Despite existing regulations, enforcement remains insufficient<\/strong>, especially for smallholders and intermediaries, which may undermine the effectiveness of traceability standards.<\/p>

From a technical perspective<\/strong>, low rural connectivity \u2014 with only 30% of rural properties<\/strong> in Brazil having internet access \u2014 severely limits the use of data collection and precision agriculture technologies<\/strong>, including traceability systems. Data management also remains problematic, with opaque, inconsistent, or missing records<\/strong> throughout the supply chain. The lack of data standardization<\/strong> among chain participants complicates integration and efficient information exchange.<\/p>

From a social standpoint<\/strong>, low educational levels<\/strong> and the scarcity of technical assistance<\/strong> among small producers hinder the adoption and operation of complex traceability systems. Many express concerns about how their commercial and personal data<\/strong> will be used by other entities in the value chain, citing fears of unfair business practices<\/strong> and dependency on technology providers<\/strong>.<\/p>

Food waste<\/strong> is another critical issue: Latin America accounts for 6% of global food losses<\/strong>, with around 15% of available food wasted annually<\/strong>. Land tenure conflicts<\/strong> further threaten food production and environmental sustainability, adding opacity to supply chains and contributing to food insecurity<\/strong>.<\/p>

For large agribusiness corporations such as BRF<\/strong> (livestock and meat processing) and Amaggi<\/strong> (soy and agricultural commodities), traceability and sustainability<\/strong> directly influence revenue management<\/strong> in several ways. Demonstrating a sustainable origin<\/strong> and deforestation-free production<\/strong> is essential for accessing premium markets<\/strong> and overcoming non-tariff barriers<\/strong> such as those imposed by the EUDR<\/strong>.<\/p>

For animal protein producers, detailed traceability across livestock and slaughterhouses<\/strong> is crucial to manage sanitary and quality risks<\/strong>. Efficient recall processes enabled by traceability minimize financial losses and protect brand reputation in contamination events. This translates into greater consumer trust<\/strong> \u2014 increasingly tied to transparency and responsible production \u2014 and the ability to command higher prices<\/strong> for sustainably certified products.<\/p>
